CMB INSTRUCTIONS 2 (contd)
First planking (contd) |
4) DECK PLANKING Plank the centre section of the front deck from prow to the front edge of the cockpit (not along the cockpit sides yet).
This is a good time to paint the inside of the cockpit. I chose dark brown. Cut out the cockpit section from the plan to get the correct curve for the cockpit front. |
|
Add one plank each side
of the cockpit, ensuring the correct width of the cockpit. At the rear
they run to the gunwale; at the front they
taper into the front deck planking due to the curvature of the hull. Continue planking outwards to the gunwales. |
|
Using a cockpit template for correct shape, plank the rear section inwards towards the torpedo trough. | |
5) SANDING When the first planking is complete, give the entire hull a thorough sanding. An orbital sander is ideal, then finish by hand. Make sure all the curves are perfectly shaped, not forgetting the concave areas under the front. Use filler if needed because this is where you set the shape of the finished model. What you're making now is the base for the secondary planking.
6) STAND I haven't detailed the stand as you can make any design you like. But if you make one now it will be very helpful from this point onwards. I used a temporary one (from another model) for the build, then designed and made another for the display case. |
